FORMER DEA AGENT PLEADS GUILTY TO LYING TO FEDERAL AGENTS

(HOUSTON) – United States Attorney Don DeGabrielle and Special Agent in Charge Wayne D. Beaman, Department of Justice Office of Inspector General, Dallas Field Office announced today the conviction of a former DEA Agent of making a materially false statement to federal agents.

Jorge Vela, 39, a former Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) special agent assigned to the McAllen, TX office, pleaded guilty to a one count criminal information charging him with making a materially false and misleading statement to federal investigating agents in April 2007. The government’s evidence proved that on April 26, 2007, Vela admitted to agents of the Department of Justice Office of Inspector General (DOJ/OIG) that he had lied during a first interview two days before when he told them he had never provided information obtained from a U.S. Government computer to a private citizen. Vela admitted he had exceeded his authorized access to confidential computer information by providing it to a private citizen.

U. S. District Judge Sim Lake accepted Vela’s guilty plea, found him guilty of the federal felony offense and has set sentencing for 2:00 p.m. on September 27, 2007. Vela faces up to five years imprisonment and a fine of up to $250,000. The court permitted Vela to remain free on bond pending his sentencing hearing.
